Introducing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Tullamore College, Monday evenings 7.30-9.30pm
CBT is a practical and goal orientated form of psychotherapy that is becoming increasingly popular in Ireland today. CBT is currently one of the most extensively researched fields in neuroscience and psychology and it has been proved to be effective for treating many different mental health issues.
The following topics will be covered in this 8 week course; the background of CBT, Cognitive Theory & Aaron Beck, Albert Ellis, Case Conceptualisation, Goal Setting, Reality Therapy, Thought & Behavioural Patterns, Obstacles to Progress and Third-wave CBT.
This course will provide participants with information about CBT and also give participants the opportunity to practise CBT in their day-to-day lives. This is a skills-based, practical and educational course which teaches us to learn how live with a more helpful approach.
Foundation Course in Counselling:
Counselling is a form of psychological or talking therapy that offers people a chance to change how they feel and to make better life choices. A counsellor should respect the client’s viewpoint, while helping to deal with specific problems, cope with crises, improve relationships or develop better ways of living.
Counsellors do not usually offer advice. Instead they help the client to gain insight into feelings and behaviour and to change the behaviour if necessary. They do this by listening and commenting on what the client says from the counsellor’s particular professional perspective.
Counselling falls into two types: Non-directive: i.e. client led, where the client takes the lead in what’s discussed; and Directive: i.e. suggesting courses of action and perhaps giving ‘homework’ exercises.
There are several counselling approaches and each model has its own theory of human development and its own way of working. Counsellors generally train within four primary theoretical orientations—1.Psychodynamic 2.Humanistic 3.Cognitive Behavioral and 4.Family Systems therapy. This course gives information and background about all 4 approaches.
Parenting in the 21st Century: Many parents feel overwhelmed by the current culture of over parenting which is prevalent in our society today. This program empowers parents to raise their children according to their own beliefs and educates parents about many myths that are often reported in the media.
Introduction to Mindfulness: In this 6 week ‘Introduction to Mindfulness’ programme, students will learn how to to apply the art of mindfulness in our day to day lives. This is a skills-based, practical and educational course which teaches us to learn how to direct our attention to the here and now. Students will be taught to develop the quality of their attention and the capacity to return again and again to the mindful state of being with kindness, patience and compassion. Mindfulness will change your life: beauty, joy, gentleness and the extraordinary miracle of life is available to us 24 hours a day, how often are we available to it?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This is an introductory course that covers a range of CBT techniques and theories. The 8 week programmes educates you about the concepts and strategies involved in CBT, including third wave CBT approaches such as DBT and ACT.
Introduction to Counselling Skills & Application : This programme focuses on the person-centered approach to therapy which teaches the therapist to emphasise the relationship with the client establishing a warm and productive therapeutic alliance so that the client feels safe to explore issues in an empathic and positive environment.
Weight Loss Programme: Take a Weight Off Your Mind is a book written by my colleague Fiona Hoban. This 8 week programme teaches you to stop dieting, stop emotional eating and learn to eat mindfully. This programme focuses on the psychology of weight gain, the reasons behind relapse and teaches easy psychological techniques that people can incorporate into their lives in order to change their attitude to food forever.
Understanding Addiction: Why do people become addicted? How should you act (or react) if someone you love is addicted? How do you manage to live a fulfilling life when you manage to stop your addiction? What are the dangers signs of impending relapse? How do you cop with relapse? This programme educates anyone who has been touched by addiction about how to live a reasonably happy and healthy life without becoming overwhelmed by addictive behaviour.
Managing Stress: Stress management has become a significant challenge for people to be able to live a healthy and balanced life in the 21st century. This programme teaches techniques to learn to prevent stress getting on top of you. What leads people to becoming overwhelmed by life? How to recognise stress before it gets on top of you.
Personal Development Workshops: This interesting 8 week programme touches on all of the above; educating you about goal setting and teaching people how to learn to live the life they want.
